This episode was created before I took over producing the show and is a good example of what the show was like back then. The show was very slow moving and focused on interviews with administrators covering school policy issues. All of this helped contribute to making the show the lowest rated show produced by DCPS.
I introduced many positive changes to update and energize the show which resulted in the show becoming #2 in its timeslot and the third most watched show on the local PBS station. (Watch shows above from season 10 to see the changes I made.)
Some of these changes include: 1) increasing the number of segments from three to eight. (This meant no segment was over 4 minutes long instead of an average length of 12 minutes per segment previously.) 2) Introducing commercial breaks where our PSAs and other interstitial material could be played. (Before this change our PSAs were airing rarely and at odd times, if at all.)
I also made the show focus on profiles of interesting teachers, students and programs instead of policy-based issues. I also insisted on the use of higher-energy music to be used during editing.
All of these things helped increase the pace of the show and made it more entertaining for the viewer.
